My Students

So much instructional time is wasted when I have to ask each student to come to my desk so that I can listen to each individual speak in Spanish! Instead, students can record themselves speaking in Spanish at home, freeing up class time for instruction and interaction!

My students attend a large public school that is growing at a rate of 8-10% per year.

I teach Spanish 3, Spanish 4 and AP Spanish Language, so my students are highly motivated to learn and to practice Spanish! They have fulfilled their two years of required world language, and are continuing in Spanish because they love the language and culture. Roughly half of my students are very outgoing and willing to take risks in speaking Spanish in class. The other half are more hesitant and would welcome the opportunity to practice their Spanish at home!

My Project

My students acquire Spanish through comprehensible input--Spanish that they read and hear that they are able to understand. They also acquire Spanish through output: speaking and writing. In a class of 25 or more students, not every student has the opportunity to try to speak in Spanish for extended periods of time. By having the opportunity to record themselves at home, my students will be forced to grow in their communication skills simply by having to attempt to speak in Spanish beyond the classroom. We live in a region of the USA where the Hispanic population is growing at a faster pace than any other ethnic group. Giving my students a way to practice speaking Spanish will increase their proficiency in the language, thus providing them with a highly sought after skill in all areas of the job market.

Many of my students feel embarrassed speaking Spanish in front of their peers.

They know they will make errors and experience anxiety when they have to speak in front of others. By allowing students to practice speaking at home, their anxiety is greatly reduced because they can practice without anyone else hearing them, and they can redo any recording that they feel they can improve. The immediate feedback of hearing themselves speak allows them to self assess and to get better and better!
