My Students

Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, Thomas Paine, Martin Luther King Jr. in person? Our students want to reenact historical speeches, debates and addresses in the place where many occurred. They want to see the plane first used in flight, see the fossils preserved and watch our government in action.

My students attend a public high school in a high poverty area.

Many have never had the opportunity to travel outside the area, yet most are college bound. They are hungry for experience and love to share their knowledge. Nestled in the Appalachian Mountains of NC, these students want to experience the world on a shoe string budget. The group that will benefit from this project will be high school juniors in the Honors English and US History courses. Many will be the first to attend college after high school, but all plan to do just that. Most of these students participate in athletics, have after school jobs and participate in clubs. My students are an incredible, very creative group that deserves my best! This class will be the first to receive a year-long course that will incorporate both history and literature. Along with that, it will involve several ways to be creative and express themselves in a variety of ways.

My Project

This proposal is linked to a newly developed year long course at our high school. Students in this course will be expected to integrate technology into daily classes, assignments and will culminate in a field trip to our nation's capitol to see first-hand everything that they have studied throughout the year. Students will research essential questions of US History and will write four research papers answering those, but will be expected to bring their research to life. Students will use the video cameras to record debates, addresses and court centered arguments to put on our classroom web page. In Washington, students will give speeches on monument steps, reenact famous court cases and historical events that will all be caught on camera. Nightly posts will be available to the entire school documenting every aspect of the class. Through this class, we, as teachers, are facilitating learning and preparing each one for his or her collegiate career.

Students in this class will benefit from donations by being able to document all of their historical explorations.

Each one will be able to film a speech, read a letter or argue a court case that is relevant to the construction of our nation AND be able to show it to others in our school and county. These students do not have the individual resources to purchase cameras for class use, but yet need the access to technology to be more successful in their futures.
