My students need cymbals for the percussion players to play in band.

My Students

The percussion section of the band adds flare and life to any music being performed. Nothing is more exciting than the "bang" and "boom" of the drums and "crash" of the cymbals. My students have the "bang" and the "boom," but when it comes to the "crash," we are inadequately equipped.

I teach in a K-12 charter school in Ohio that services an urban, high-risk population.

Band classes are available as an elective to high school students. Our band program is going into its third year and is growing to include more students. It is so exciting to give this population of students the opportunity to participate in instrumental music. Unfortunately, because of the low socioeconomic status of most of my students, many of them cannot afford their own instruments, so the school has to provide them. The budget for our band is minimal and it has been a challenge the past couple of years finding an instrument to put in every hand in the class. Every year tough choices are made on what equipment is essential to purchase for our band to survive and which equipment we can live without if need be. Unfortunately, buying equipment for the percussion section has been low on the priority list.

My Project

Part of being a percussion student is learning how to play all the various percussion instruments with proper technique. My percussion students have not learned how to play the cymbals because we don't have any! Getting this equipment will help round out their education as percussionists. In addition, having proper percussion equipment makes the entire band sound better. Last year, there were several pieces we played that called for crash or suspended cymbal in the percussion section but we had no way to create the effect. A pair of crash cymbals and a suspended cymbal stand will make our percussionists better players and our band sound more professional.

Over the past two years, I have watched the students and school community take pride in our band.

A pair of cymbals may not seem like it will make a big difference. But the more equipment we have, the better our band sounds. The better our band sounds, the more our students and community take pride in what we do. We have got the "bang" and the "boom" we need and with your help we can get the "crash" to help make our program more successful.
