When We Grow Up!

My students need 2 sets of community helper costumes and a set of discussion cards to act out various roles during our Community Helpers Theme.

My Students

Just imagine children pretending to be doctors, teachers, firefighters and other community helpers in their regular clothes. Then imagine the excitement they will experience from actually being able to dress up as those same community helpers and using props such as doctor's kits.

My class consists of twenty students that are four (or will be by September 30,) and five years of age.

They were selected for enrollment in my Pre-Kindergarten class, which is part of a public school, based on the fact that they are financially disadvantaged and scored below 70 on a pre-screening test. My class is evenly divided by gender: ten girls, and ten boys. Eight of which are Hispanic and the remaining twelve are African Americans.

My Project

The items that I am requesting include ten community helper costumes. With these costumes, my students can actually pretend to be firefighters, police officers, doctors, nurses, teachers, etc. Along with the costumes, I am requesting a play doctors kit, and a learning set containing various pictures pertaining to community helpers.

My students enjoy going to the dramatic play center pretending to be mothers and fathers.

However, with the community helper costumes they can broaden their mock roles to include what they hope to become when they grow up. This will create a lot of excitement about learning about community helpers among my students.
