Counting on Our School-Based Bank

My Students

Students run a school based bank and offer coin counting & rolling as a service. We had the requested counter for 5 years & it served the students well. At present, students stack & count coins by hand--tedious & time consuming. A new one would better serve our customers & charity fund raisers.

My students are grades 10-12; they started and are running several businesses in the school to serve students, faculty and staff.

The first business they started in 2003 was (school name) Financial Center (our school-based bank). This serves the students by encouraging them to open a savings account which pays interest; students working the bank must figure interest and send out statements. These students make many of the decisions in running the bank such as how to set up the bank, how much money each teller is responsible for, completing paperwork, auditing paperwork, entering records in Excel. This ownership in decision making ensures that the students are hard working, accountable, and responsible. We are never short money; in fact, if a student's drawer is short at the end of the day, they feel responsible and pay any shortage out of their own pocket. Students attend public high school; population 700 students. The school is located in a small town.

My Project

Students running the school bank enjoy providing multiple services to our customers (students, staff). One service they have provided for years was a coin counting service. The AccuBanker Coin Counter served us well for the past 5 years. It no longer works. Students continued to provide the service to customers but have to count the coins by hand. They would like to once again provide this service more efficiently. Students decided to charge a 2% fee to regular customers; they also made the decision to provide this service at no charge to those who are doing charity fund raising involving coins. In addition to counting, the students also roll the coins, provide the customer with the actual cash in currency/coin, and take rolled coins to town bank to ready the school based bank for service the next school day.

Students in the Academy of Finance program started and have run a school based business since 2003.

In 2005 we were able to purchase an AccuBanker coin counter with an economics grant. This grant has been discontinued. The counter served the students well for 5 years and it wore out. When customers bring in bags of coins from home or a fundraiser, the students running the school-based bank continue to provide the coin counting service by hand, roll coins & the result is satisfied returning customers.
