What's for Lunch?

My students need hands-on food replicas to help them make a real connection from our Food Chemistry/Nutrition unit to the choices they make in their daily lives.

My Students

"I made it myself!" Sophie explained proudly when I asked about her sack lunch. Spread out on the cafeteria table in front of her was a bag of potato chips, package of cookies, juice box, cheese crackers and fruit roll. My heart sank. Sophie scored highest in a recent Health/Nutrition test...

Students in my fourth grade class come from hard working families in our urban community.

Independence is fostered and valued, and many of these kids shoulder family responsibilities and are responsible for organizing a meal or two a day. Unfortunately, I see them making nutritional mistakes on a daily basis. Poor food choices result in poor energy, emotional fragility (both highs and lows), and affect attendance.

My Project

I want to provide kids with brightly colored, realistic plastic food models to help them learn about healthy eating and practice making wise choices. The 46 food models in this kit represent the five main food groups with life-sized replicas of various foods like bananas, yogurt, bagels, oatmeal, spaghetti, chicken, beets, etc. Students can physically select, carry, hold, and group foods into healthy and not so healthy meals. Additionally, the 1 ounce replica of fat is a graphic, squishy, touchable item students will thrill to hold in their hands and examine. Fourth grade students are extremely kinesthetic and visual, and all these items are bound to make a big impact on them.

My students are fabulous learners, but without a real-world connection to their lives, sometimes the academic content just doesn't stick.

Giving the kids fun, colorful, realistic looking food to practice and 'play' with will bring the nutrition unit home, make it more real. This may be the missing link between the academic knowledge and real-life application for bright students like Sophie.
