My Students

Studying our neighbors in Mexico and Canada is a part of our curriculum, but often students have little interest in these two amazing countries. That's why I want to use novels that are set in the two countries to help them understand the geography and people of Canada and Mexico.

My classroom is made up of a wonderful group of thirty-two Sixth graders.

Our school is a traditional school. Many of my students are limited by the borders of our state and the borders of our country. There are students in my class that need to be exposed to the wonders of the world around them and this can best be done through literature.

My Project

The two sets of books that I am requesting are adventure books, with characters a little bit older than the students in my classroom. Far North is set in Canada and Sparrow Hawk Red is set in Mexico. Both stories involve kids from the United States who find themselves in unique situations in these novels. Not only do I use these books to enhance our country studies, but we also are able to work on vocabulary, fluency, comprehension and life skills. In both novels the characters are wonderful examples of not quitting and always doing your best, two skills my students are still developing in their own lives.

Having full class sets of each novel to use in the classroom helps enhance all subject areas and involve students in reading.

Both authors have written several novels and students will find themselves unable to put down novels written by these two authors.
