My Students

My school only opened two years ago. This is the first time that 8th grade students will attend and its the first time that they will ever interact with electronic balances. This skill is vital for entering a high school science lab.

My students attend a public charter school for all-girls.

Our curriculum focuses on college preparation for all scholars. Our CRCT scores are above state and national averages yet these students have not had any true laboratory experience with real laboratory equipment. These students are highly motivated and ready for a more advanced learning opportunity.

My Project

Students will be able to collect one of the most important pieces of data required in science: mass. In Physical Science, which is a combination of physics and chemistry, mass is a huge common thread. For physics, mass is the root of force, gravity, and acceleration calculations and applications. In chemistry, the law of conservation of mass drives all chemistry concepts and calculations. Without having the means to find the mass of various objects, it will be difficult for students to visualize and apply the concepts being learned in class.

I have taught science for 9 years prior to coming to Ivy Preparatory Academy.

I have not completed a lab yet that did not require the use of mass in finding data and applying it to real-life situations. I cannot imagine teaching a physical science course and not having the capability to find the mass of different objects.
