Bring the Zoo to Class!

My students need a multimedia projector to integrate technology into their daily math and science instruction.

My Students

Today’s fourth-graders are bombarded with technology: Smartphones, iPods, HDTV, laptops and gaming systems. Now imagine capturing these tech-savvy students' attention with a white board and 1980s overhead projector. Even with the most creative lessons, it's hard to compete with today's technology.

We have over 75% low-income students.

About 96% of our students are minorities. Some parents struggle to meet basic needs, much less be involved in the classroom. Many students come from the surrounding neighborhood and have experienced things that fourth graders never should. I find it extremely challenging to make education seem important to students that are just trying to get by. In a 2009 student survey at our school, only 36% of the students said, "My teachers make school work interesting." Technology is one of the few things that excites these students. They respond to the hands-on and novel use of technology. Other students have very creative personalities and become restless with traditional teaching methods. Students with auditory, visual or kinesthetic learning styles benefit from engaging multimedia lessons that correlate with their strengths.

My Project

Studies show multimedia-enhanced instruction has a significant improvement in knowledge retention among ‘low-knowledge’ learners. After attending math and technology workshops this summer, I am excited about the multimedia opportunities available. A projector would give my class access to worlds and ideas they might not have otherwise. Imagine Skype discussions with a scientist, virtual field trips to the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences or seeing our state through Google Earth. In fourth grade, students learn about animal habitats and adaptation. I would like my students to Skype with zoologists at the NC Zoo and watch interactive animal adaptation tutorials as a class. Then I want them to take this knowledge, come up with their own topic related question and answer it by creating a multimedia project throughout the year. At the end of the year, students will be able to take pride in sharing their final products with the rest of the class through the use of the projector.

Students must become 21st Century learners.

For my students a multimedia projector in the classroom would be a big step. Currently, there are only three out-of-date desktop computers grouped in a corner of my classroom; it is impossible for me to reach all my students with this technology. A projector would bring learning to life and allow the students to share in the experience.
