My Students

I teach Preschool Special Ed on a military base. My school district needed to build a new building to accommodate the numbers of troops and their families who have been assigned to our base. We are ready to move in to the new building, but we are moving in with just the basics.

My students are 3, 4, and 5 year-old children of military parents, many of whom are overseas, or are preparing to go.

Over half of my students have special needs which could include anything from speech-language delays to Cerebral Palsy, Down syndrome, or Autism.

My Project

As part of a larger set of curriculum materials purchased by the district, we have a puppet theater, but no puppets. We also have dollhouse furniture, but no dollhouse or dolls. Dramatic play is important to my students' development in the areas of symbolism and representational thought, problem solving, literacy and language, cooperation, turn-taking, compromise and empathy as they develop an awareness of the feelings of others.

Have you ever heard a 4 year-old say "My daddy's in Afghanistan"?

Or another insist that he didn't have a dad because his dad had been deployed more than he had been home during his son's 3 1/2 years of life. Dramatic play provides a safe and acceptable outlet for my students to express their feelings and to learn to cope with a parent who is overseas or preparing to leave on deployment.
