This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I love my LCD projector and use it for every class. The problem is, it's very hard to put music on it with the limiting software on a computer. With an Elmo document reader, you just put down any piece of music and "voila"!, it's on the board.

I teach 670 typical Kindergarten - fifth grade students.

By typical, I mean they love and respond to technology. My class is fun and engaging. But whenever you put technology in front of them, they REALLY start paying attention and get excited about the lessons. I only see these students once a week for 45 minutes. I value every single minute I have to teach them and don't want to waste any time having to write music on the board (very time consuming).

My Project

Students really connect to technology. A typical class might have 40% of the students who raise their hand to participate. But when you use technology components like a document reader, participation goes over 90%. Not only will the document reader engage the students, it will allow me to write on the music, circling things, using colors or symbols to highlight areas, and even to cover up areas or cross out areas. When I tell the students "we're starting at measure 5", I can actually point to it on the music using the document reader. It helps with students who are in the early stages of music reading and sometimes might be lost. It also gets music out of the hands of the students so they are sitting up tall and looking up. Students can come up to the music and point or write on the music. I can quickly change music just by putting down a new piece. The old way of writing music on the board took too much time to change from one piece to another.
