How to Live a Lung Life! Smoke Signals for Teens

My students need a set of preserved lungs to help them visualize the consequences of smoking on the respiratory system in addition to seeing how the lungs function.

My Students

Each day 3,000 children smoke their first cigarette. Tobacco use primarily begins in early adolescence, typically by age 16.Almost all first use occurs before high school graduation. I want to do something to help my students avoid using tobacco before they can do so legally.

My students range from 16 to 18 and come from every socioeconomic level.

They are a great group of kids with talent and potential to spare. At City Academy we try to expose them to a wide range of subjects and issues to create well rounded students/future citizens.

My Project

As a Biology teacher I have a unique opportunity to show students some of the physical consequences of the choices they make. I often try to tie my lessons to issues and topics that are relevant to students lives today. The use and consequences of tobacco are exceedingly relevant to the age of students that I teach.Students often cannot visualize threats to their health unless they see them directly.The demonstration kit I have requested will help students see and understand what effect tobacco can have on their bodies.The lungs look and feel real and the difference between the healthy lung and the diseased one is so obvious and tangible that it will make a lasting impression on the students

Adolescents who start smoking in high school have a 75% chance of still using tobacco 7 years later and 90% of adult smokers questioned in a poll started smoking well before they were 19.

The choice will inevitable be theirs to make but what I want to provide is a vision of what tobacco does to the inside of your body.Students are already aware that smoking is unhealthy but they haven't seen 'unhealthy' up close and felt it with their hands.I want them to be educated before they make a choice.
