Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are from a low income community. Their natural curiosity as First Graders is not enhanced by their environment. Weekly Reader magazines gives my students an opportunity to come in contact with the world. It also supports critical non-fiction reading skills.

My students are eager learners and naturally curious about their world.

They have very limited or no family enrichment activities. They attend a K-8 public school in CT with a student population of 50% Hispanic and 50% African American. My students are heterogeneous mixed in abilities within my classroom.

My Project

"Hey, Josh!" said Jovanny. "Look at this squid!" Let's read about it. This would be a regular possibility during independent reading time. The students will be sharing new discoveries about science and supporting non-fiction reading curriculum using our Weekly Reader magazines. The Ocean Learning kit will support learning vocabulary, sorting and classifying sea life using a fun hands-on approach. It's just what the class needs to help support our Learning Fair Unit on the Ocean.

My goal with my students during the year is to open their eyes to the world beyond their neighborhoods.

I want to entice them into learning to read for pleasure and to find engaging reading material that they will find interesting and want to read. School is the only place for many of them to expand their thinking and discover new ideas.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
