This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

One of the best ways to become a fluent reader is by listening to fluent reading. My students need all the exposure they can get to become the expressive readers they want to be.

My school is located in South Texas along the Mexican border.

My school is in a small district in a rural community with a high free lunch rate. Most of my students are recent immigrants from Mexico, who are barely learning the English language. My little 1st graders love reading books and listening to stories. My students have the desire to become fluent readers!

My Project

In my classroom my 1st graders are always excited about reading. They love to read and being read to!What my class needs are more resources for my students to be able to listen to fluent reading. We currently have two very old tape players with books on tape. My students love to use them, but sometimes they don't work properly and when they do work, it is only possible to have two students listen at a time. I am slowly beginning to build my listening library to include CD players and books on CD, but only have one CD player and a limited selection of books for them to listen to. I am requesting two more CD players and several books with CDs. I know that by having the opportunity to listen to fluent reading, they will in turn become fluent readers themselves.

Reading opens so many fantastic doors to children.

Understanding the world around them and being able to travel to other worlds is possible through books! By providing these wonderful resources for my students, you will enable them to experience new literature being read by fluent readers. The experiences of listening to classic stories will have them grow into expressive and fluent readers.
