This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Students who love to read become life long learners, and I want my first graders to continue to learn as long as they live! As a teacher new to the first grade, my classroom library is quite bare, and my students need books on their level that will hold their attention.
The majority of my students are on the free or reduced lunch program, and they face a lot of challenges in their worlds.
Some of them do not have any books in their homes, and almost none of them are read to at home on a consistent basis. It is not that my students do not have a desire to learn, but rather that they have not been equipped with the same tools that some other students have the opportunity to have. Many of my students have never been out of our city, much less the state of Arkansas. Books are a great way to expand their horizons and help them experience new things.
My Project
This classroom library of books will allow my students access to a wide variety of skill levels, subjects and types of books. Students will have individual books that they can read on their own or during buddy reading time. The audio books will be great in the classroom listening center, and are a great tool to assist struggling readers. The big books will be wonderful during shared reading time, and students will also have a great time using them during their big book center. All of these materials will be used on a daily basis by students, and their benefits will be great!
This project will truly make a difference in teaching a child to read!
Not only will it benefit my classroom this year, but it will benefit students in years to come. Reading is at the heart of everything we do, and by donating to this project, you will be helping students immeasurably!
