My Students

There is nothing wrong with getting angry...it's the actions that result from the anger.

We live in a town of about 30,000 with five other elementary schools in the district.

The students that I teach are in kindergarten, first, and second grade. They are in a special education classroom the majority of the day due to behavior disorders.

My Project

The resources I am asking for will be used for an ongoing "project." Because the students I have are emotionally and behaviorally challenged I teach them skills that will help them through the rest of their life. For instance, I teach my students to monitor their behavior. When they are feeling like they are getting frustrated or mad I encourage them to chose a calming strategy to help them calm down. Prior to teaching and facilitating this I have many students that become physically and verbally aggressive. I have a calming strategy set up in my room called the Calming Corner. This is a place where students can go to "chill out" when they are feeling frustrated. In this area I try to provide the students with several objects that the students can use to calm down. In the past I have used pla-doh, blankets, pillows, and free draw paper. I would like to add a chair that rocks, and some squishy balls, or other squishy/squeezy objects.

This is so important because these young students will soon be young adults in our community.

Even as adults there will be many times through out their lives when they will become frustrated with others and will need to think of calming strategies...whether it be walking away, taking a break, or talking it out. I feel as though if I am able to teach these kids when they are young, they have a better chance of succeeding in the future.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
