What should I wear to school today? This is a common question asked by children. If they can learn to tell what the weather will be that day by looking outside and recognizing the clouds, or understanding a weather map in the newspaper or on TV, they will be able to answer that question themselves.
My students are wonderful children who want to learn about the world around them.
Many are the oldest child in their family. They are beginning fourth grade students who are starting to understand that they need to be responsible citizens and that the choices they make have consequences.
The neighborhood is made up of lower to middle class families in an older part of town with a few newer subdivisions added. The school is 26 years old with some teachers having spent their entire career in this school. There is a good feeling of community and support.
My Project
Weather will become an exciting and hands on subject for the students instead of a dry textbook reading with the resources that are requested. The Interactive Weather Map will enable each child to manipulate and plot the weather symbols for that day. The students will be able to hold, share, and read the weather station, hygrometer, and anemometer weather instruments. For a fun pretest and posttest, the Photoquiz Weather and Weather Bingo resources will excite and challenge the children as they practice together. Using the Jumpstarters for Meteorology Book and the Weather Transparency Book will provide accurate and meaningful activities to teach the children all about precipitation, the water cycle, the different kinds of clouds, and air pressure.
Seeing students eyes light up with understanding of the concept being taught is the goal of this project.
Being able to touch and manipulate the weather instruments will turn the lights on in my students eyes. I will be able to teach weather to all three fourth grade classes. Teaching almost 100 students to love and understand weather will have a long lasting life benefit.
