My Students Will Flip!

My Students

Yawn. A lesson that slips right through the teenage mind when the teacher explains it will stick forever when it is a student created video shown to the class. My students need to be engaged in their learning and prepared for the 21st century world ahead of them. Flip cameras will fill both needs.

Our school lies in a rural area of North Carolina which has become severely depressed and impoverished since the textile mills closed.

My students run the gamut from those striving to go to college at some of the best schools in the state to those struggling to simply pass sophomore English and make it to 11th grade. All of my students share one thing in common; they need to be engaged in learning in order to achieve their goals. What will engage high achievers, low level learners and everyone in between? Flip cameras! Flip cameras allow students to create and video short movies easily. These cameras are ideal for classroom use because they make it simple to upload and share videos instantly. I teach English and U.S. History to 10th and 11th graders at the AP, honors and standard level, depending on the year. The flip cameras would be a rare resource which would benefit all of my students equally.

My Project

Imagine the howling laughter of your classmates as you rap your way through a retelling of the Constitutional Convention. Now imagine sharing that experience, not just with your class, but with students in other classes, at your school and across the world. How much more invested would you be in making your retelling accurate and entertaining? How much more would you and your classmates learn about the Constitutional Convention? Flip cameras will allow my English and History students, both this year and for years to come, to record themselves during our frequent group projects, presentations, and historical simulations. These recordings could then be watched, analyzed, redone, shared with others and used in a multitude of ways to expand learning beyond the borders of my classroom. Will my students choose to impeach Andrew Jackson in their Senate simulation? Whose persuasive speech will win a historical figure the title of "Most Influential American"? You can help them find out!

These cameras will make a tremendous difference, not just in my classroom, but in the school as well, since I plan to make them available to all of the teachers on staff to use with their classes while my students are not using them.

With these cameras our whole school will be able to experience the benefits of self publication and our students will be engaged in learning and better prepared to succeed in a technology filled world.
