This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our Classroom Mission: As a first grade teacher I am perpetually researching strategies which capture early-age curiosities about literacy. A challenging component of teaching literacy is encouraging students to write and draw about their interests.

Our school is a culturally diverse population and resides immediately next to our local University.

Consequently, we are a Professional Development School and we are honored to have direct contact with many Curriculum & Instructional Professors from the University. However, for many of our students English is their second language. Writing expressions can be a difficult process for these students and students who have not been exposed to scribing their thoughts or interests. Writing journals, at varied levels, are an important characteristic that aid in the development of student responses to literature or just writing about what is important to them.

My Project

Student Needs: The following journals will contribute to “engaged” literacy approaches and responses for all student levels. It is my intent to provide one of these specific journals based upon each student's first grade entry-level abilities. As students progress they would then graduate to the next corresponding writing journal to meet the student’s developmental needs.

Children naturally desire to explore their imaginations.

Yet, within our current societal norms we offer enumerable technological tools which replace a child's natural exploration of their imaginative devices. Through the vehicles of these writing journals, students will be immersed in creative thinking and cognitive development. Maybe we can inspire the next Critic, Playwright, Novelist, Journalist or Poet.
