Scraps to Soil

My students need a vermi-composting bin & red worms.

My Students

My students want to turn their food scraps into soil and help our school "Go Green"! We tried last year, but with limited supplies and limited space we were unsuccessful. The worm bin would allow my Science Lab students (645 kids) to learn about composting, worms and soil while "Going Green".

My students attend an inner city, true neighborhood school.

The school is high poverty and the students do not get many experiences, other than what we can offer them at school. I will be teaching about 650 students from Kinder - 5th grade in the upcoming school year. We tried composting last year and due to equipment and space we were unsuccessful. We built a composting bin and it didn't work out as planned and we didn't have the space to build it like we needed. The kids I teach are very determined and want to make our composting program work.

My Project

I am requesting a composting bin that is compact so that the limited space we have will be adequate. We also need the worms. With the worm bin the students will not only be composting and helping learn about "Going Green", but they will also learn about worms and soil. The soil produced will be used in our plant units to actually grow the plants. This is an added benefit because of us not having to purchase the soil to use to plant the plants. It will be so amazing to see the students on their first lab day when they see the new worm composting bin and the red wrigglers!

Not only will the students be helping the school "Go Green", but they will learn about worms and how they help our environment as well as soil and nutrients.

The added benefit will be being able to use the soil to plant our plants in the spring. This will not only help the 650+ students this year, but for many students for years to come.
