My Students

Have you ever wondered what it would be like not to have access to books for reading pleasure. Many of my students don't have to wonder they live with that very fact on a daily basis.

As the special education teacher for the middle school and high school, my classroom is a hodge-podge of academic abilities.

Many of my students live in one parent families or with other relatives. A majority of our students are on free or reduced lunches and struggle, often times, just to have their daily needs met. They are eager to learn and make something of their life. Several of my students will be first generation college or career tech students. Most of my students have yet to develop a love for reading because reading materials are not accessible. Home libraries are very sparse and the closest public library is 10 miles away.

My Project

The book binder and combs will make it possible for my students to write their own anthologies and help build their writing skills while contributing reading materials to our classroom library to be enjoyed for years and for younger brothers and sisters to have the opportunity to read at home. With these materials my students will have a fun way to practice reading and writing the different genres in literature. They will have a purpose for reading.

Your donation to this project will help to revive creativity, inspire students to develop critical thinking skills, and bring an eagerness to learn back to the classroom.

The students won't ask "when will I ever use this?" They will be applying the skill and learning to enjoy different types of literature.
