Density Blocks - A Science Foundation

My students need 10 Density Cube sets and 5 Mystery Density sets to properly develop the fundamental scientific concepts of mass, volume, density, and scientific inquiry.

My Students

Do you remember what it was like, going through science class without getting to put your hands on things? We have many hands on activities, but lack materials for the fundamental ideas of mass, volume, density, and scientific inquiry.

Our school serves a diverse population of students from many countries and many backgrounds.

They are a happy group who come together to help each other learn and perform acts of service for the community. They hold the record for most money raised for Relay for Life in our area, despite being considered a high poverty school. They pride themselves on their annual “Helping Hands” day where the entire school spends the day scattered across town helping the community in other schools, soup kitchens, nursing and retirement homes, and other charities.

My Project

Last year was the first year for 6th grade to be in the middle school. This change allowed for the students to have teachers who are dedicated to teaching one specific subject. Previously science was mainly taught from a book, without much hands-on work by the students. This year all the students have commented on how improved the curriculum is. Density cubes offer a hands-on way for the students to properly discover through scientific inquiry how mass, volume, and density are related. The deluxe set adds wood that sinks and plastic that floats, helping break assumptions about how things work. The Mystery Density set allows for proper evaluation of the scientific method and lab procedures. Combined, the two sets also offer a plenitude of other uses outside specific density labs.

Despite the improvements in 6th grade science, we still lack these versatile resources to build a proper science foundation in such a critical scientific concept.
