Motivating students with Autism through visual supports!

My students need a color printer, ink jet cartridges, and dry erase markers.

My Students

Do you remember what it was like to do an activity in school that was very interesting, colorful, and engaging? My students have severe deficits in learning that require color-printed items to be made that are specific to their needs.

I teach 6th through 8th graders at the middle school level.

Many of these students come from difficult environments and they need highly motivating activities in their daily routine to allow them to learn more efficiently. Many students I teach have Autism, and visual learning is key to their success. The students in my school are between 70 and 80% low income, and many of the students in my class are very poor. They have many "strikes against them," so that is why I feel it is important to nurture them both in the areas of the reading/math areas as well as the social/emotional areas. Producing activities with a program called Vizzle is highly motivating as it is very colorful, clear, and can be made specific to each child's needs.

My Project

Our school district is utilizing a program called Vizzle that educates children with Autism, as well as other significant disabilities, to learn in a highly visual manner. It is a web-based program that allows a teacher to print many items that the student uses on the computer. This allows the child to practice these skills away from the computer (as we only have 2 computers to share the Vizzle program,) and fun matching games and color printed books can allow for more practice of these extremely important skills. The more the children learn via these methods, the happier, more independent, and less stressed their lives will be. Imagine a child who does not understand the concept of "beside." These concepts are difficult for kids with Autism to understand. Then imagine the child learning it because he finally saw it in a visual method that really teaches these kids! I know they are stressed when they do not understand these concepts. The printed items will help!

I know that printing the items that are on this program, (as well as using the dry erase markers for the students to practice their weekly spelling words on the board,) will increase the amount of learning that occurs with my children.

They will learn much more. My students need to learn as efficiently as possible to allow for greater knowledge and these visual supports help. I know that the students will be much happier and healthier because of the reduced stress and increased learning.
