My Students

"Show me the number in the ten thousands place." That may sound easy to you, but to a 9 year old it is not. Place value is a critical part of number sense and one of the hardest things to grasp. These cards enable students to recreate numbers while focusing on the value of each digit.

Our school is a Title 1, ESL (English Second Language) Center school.

While the majority of our students come from impoverished homes, our school is rated an A school. Many of our parents are active in PTA and volunteer in the classrooms. It is not uncommon to have several English language learners in a single classroom. Last year I had a student from Korea, one from Mexico, and one from Germany. My students love to learn Math, I try to incorporate hands-on materials into every lesson.

My Project

Using place value cards provide students with a visual representation of place value. These strips enable students to break numbers down into expanded form, add or subtract without regrouping, and multiply. Place value strips are also ideal for displaying answers. Students solve the problem using the strips and then lay the answer flat on their desk or hold them up. A quick glance and the teacher knows who has the concept and who does not. Place value strips are best used in small groups of two or three. This encourages students to help and learn from each other. They are ideal for students who are learning English; displaying the number while saying it removes some of the language barrier. The numbers are colorful and easy for all students to see.

Place value is one of the most basic concepts in math, and one of the hardest to teach.

Many students struggle with place value. Unless a student understands the concept of place value, they will go through school memorizing mathematical algorithms without ever knowing the "why." It is my hope that through extensive use of these strips I can improve my students' understanding of this important concept.
