My Students

Imagine sitting on the quiet edge of a peaceful pond to think, read, or share with friends. Moss covered stones provide seating near the cool swirling waters, creating an oasis in a busy day.

I teach second grade in Southwest Missouri and though all subjects are important I believe that reading is the most important subject we teach at this young age.

Their future success in all other subjects is determined by their ability to read. Children need to see reading as something important, fun and achievable. At this age most children are still eager to learn but as they struggle this eagerness is sometimes replaced with frustration and sometimes apathy. Creating an environment where reading is fun and enjoyable is critical at this time in their lives. I am trying to create a reading center in my room that will invite my students to relax and enjoy a good book by themselves or with a friend. I teach in a school where more than 70% of our students receive free or reduced lunch due to their parents' economic status. Due to budget cuts the funding for classroom materials has been seriously decreased. I receive only enough money to keep my class provided with basic paper supplies.

My Project

My students need a classroom carpet which can be placed in our reading nook. This will make a comfortable place for children to sit and read to themselves and each other. I have spent my own money over the past 4 years collecting books to fill my classroom library but I need a carpet to create an inviting place to enjoy these books.

By donating to this project you are providing a better education environment for children who normally don't receive much of anything.

This project can help increase their motivation to read and develop basic skills necessary to make it through the remainder of their school career.
