My Students

"Those who have much are often greedy, those who have little always share." Oscar Wilde said, and share is what urban public schools do. Without excuses, we share! We empower our students with limited resources, to foster learning beyond the classroom walls. Can you help us reach farther?

My students are a multicultural dream!

I teach in an urban public charter school in Wisconsin, with grades k5-8. We are an "English as a Second Language" focus school, which brings us students from around the globe. My second grade students always enjoy reading and language arts, but their favorite subjects are math and science. The hands-on nature and experiment based learning can be enjoyed by students from every culture regardless of any language barriers.

My Project

Having the freedom to demonstrate experiments using a document camera and projector would allow easy viewing by everyone in the room. I currently provide directions at the front of the room and demonstrate from a table. The students are limited by what they can see and often forget as they do the experiments, what steps to follow. A projector would allow me to work with the students in a step-by-step manner. Visual cues could be placed for students, as reminders of what to do next. I can also connect a PC or laptop to the projector and let my students take digital field trips beyond our walls to reinforce scientific concepts. It would be extraordinary! The digital camera would allow us to monitor experiments by documenting steps along the way. We would also be able to bring our actual field trips back to the classroom for further learning experiences. Reliving the trips, strengthens understanding!

By assisting our class in attaining these crucial technological tools, my students will not be limited by the same old rules.

"Share and share alike." Sometimes having the necessary equipment at hand makes an experience more than typical. It makes it unforgettable!
