Kids Making a Difference - Community Reading for Change

My students need a classroom set (30 copies) of the young reader's version of "Three Cups of Tea."

My Students

Over 50% of the students in our middle school qualify for free or reduced lunch. The 25 middle school kids that participate in our unique learning community come from very diverse backgrounds. These struggling learners have been identified as needing an alternative learning model, as traditional classroom learning practices have proved to be unsuccessful for each one.

These 25 struggling learners have been assessed to have great skills and abilities in reading, writing and mathematics.

However, the great challenge has been to engage and motivate these learners to activate and utilize their knowledge. We will integrate all four subject areas into a curriculum that will invite learning in a non-traditional or experiential way. During their two year experience, we hope to empower our students to become active participants in their community. To introduce our kids to Service Learning, we will use stories that motivate students to learn more about their world and to understand that their own personal actions can make a difference in the world.

My Project

In order to do good work in a community, one must first build a community. Our students need 30 copies of "Three Cups of Tea" to inspire them to work together for change in their community. Sharing Greg Mortenson's book will provide an opportunity for our students to learn to share ideas respectfully, to listen carefully, and to speak honestly.

Greg Mortenson's model teaches us that every contribution is meaningful and powerful.

As they read and discuss Mortenson's journey, students will develop the skills they need for their own journey.
