My Students

As technology makes our world smaller, it is more important than ever for children to appreciate the richness found in the customs and cultures of others.

My preschool students attend a public school in a rural Western Kentucky town.

Most of the children come from low income families, have migrated from other locations, or have special needs. My 34 students are divided into morning and afternoon sessions. Although many of the three, four, and five year old children are reluctant to leave their care-givers, (at the first of the school year), they soon develop friendship and feel confident as they take their first step into early education.

My Project

As we explore various cultures, we can help students find different countries on the globe, view pictures of the children who live there, and listen to and play native music. During center time, the students could extend learning while playing with multicultural dolls and puppets, and even learn simple words from other countries!

By supporting our project, the young students in my class would have the necessary tools to learn about all of the little children in the world.

Ultimately, they would begin the wonderful journey of becoming caring and open-minded members of society. "Children are one-third of our population and all of our future." ~Select Panel for the Promotion of Child Health - 1981
