My Students

My students love reading different genres each month in my classroom, but providing each student with their own copy to use is sometimes difficult. My students also love to check their fluency rate, but we don't have a class set of timers in order to do so.

My students are wonderful, I think every teacher probably says that, but I truly love working with them and teaching them new things.

I teach in an elementary school with about 1,200 students. We are a newer school, but transient a lot of the time. They love learning and discovering new things.

My Project

Each month I have a genre study in my classroom, and students are required to read a book at home and in literature circles that follows the specified genre. I usually have 8 different titles for each genre, but it gets rather difficult to find so many copies of books. I would love to have a small group set of the book, When You Reach Me, to use in the mystery genre. The students in my classroom love to read a new genre each month and I love that they are being exposed to many different genres. I would also like to help my students with their reading rates, and if we had a class set of timers we could calculate our rate weekly and it would help improve their reading skills for fluency. I am requesting six copies of the book, When You Reach Me and 12 classroom timers.

I think that it is important for students to be exposed to different genres and not to stick with the same thing all the time.

By giving them opportunities to read multiple genres, they may find something new that they didn't know about before. Students also need to be reading at a speed that is appropriate for them and if they can check their rate on a frequent basis, they will better understand what they can do to improve their reading skills.
