3rd Grade Media Marvels Making Social Change

My students need a camcorder to create video projects in literacy, social studies, and all subjects!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As my students become community members in our classroom, we will work on how to be a positive community member in the world. We all have the responsibility to make improvements in our neighborhoods. Using multimedia is perfect for my students as they make change in artistic ways!

My students are a dynamic group of 3rd graders in the South Bronx.

The school possesses a mixture of Hispanic and Black students. In our arts-integrated school, we have a group of incredibly energetic and enthusiastic students. In a school with a strong focus on academics and attending college, I want my students to remember where they are coming from and how they can make positive change in the world wherever they go. Many are Spanish speakers and receive English Language support. Currently, the school is K-8 and growing into K-12 over the next several years. 79% of our students are eligible for free and reduced lunch, which is often used as an indicator of poverty. However, our test scores have deemed us one of the 4 "high performing" schools in the Bronx according to New York State.

My Project

While the camcorder would be used in a multitude of ways by our 3rd graders, there are two ways that stand out. For one, the students will use it as a significant piece in social action projects geared towards bettering our immediate community. The power of media is growing and students have the ability to partake in that. This coming year students will search their neighborhood for something they want to improve. Using the camcorder they can document it and form an action plan of how to make social change. It is intended that the project and how it is used specifically come from the students and their passions. Given that we are also an arts-integrated school, the art projects possibly with a camcorder in the room multiply! The camcorder will be used to strengthen literacy skills by creating vocabulary-based skits, which can then be recorded on the camcorder. These various projects lend themselves perfectly to a donated camcorder and to the creativity the students possess!!

The camcorder is critical in the classroom given where we are situated in technology development.

Using computers and technology is a skill ALL children need to have going forward. Those fast growing areas are the future and possessing media literacy will be pertinent to the students' overall success. The social change the students can create when a camcorder is placed in their hands is invaluable. Nothing is more important than showing these young scholars that change and power are possible.
