My Students

Help my students see! The rooms in my school are outdated to current technology and student needs. Rooms are not shaped sensibly, and a document camera would pair with an available projector to make sure all students could easily see the tasks at hand.

The students at this high school have an overabundance of soul.

Unfortunately, that's all many of them have. Their passion exceeds their means and the means of the school. With a population in which nearly 80% of the students qualify for free or reduced lunch, 50% are learning English as a second or third language, and 25% qualify for special education programs. . . their needs are great. These needs often go unmet, simply due to a lack of adequate resources. This school was once a middle school, and the building is clearly burdened with the current occupancy. Space, funds, and resources are all highly limited. These limitations are an incredible shame and an incredible letdown to the very potent spirits of the students. They want the best, and just like every student--they deserve it.

My Project

With a document camera, it's like students are on TV! The camera takes whatever you put beneath it and projects it onto a nearby screen or wall. With such a device all my students would be able to see notes, sample problems, and intricate details of laboratory exercises - currently a vision that's obscured by the classroom layout. They would be able to show off their engineering designs and prototypes, their chemical equations and lab notes, and their problem-solving examples to the whole class. By giving their own views and interpretations, students would help other students understand content, raising the level of learning throughout the classroom.

Students need to be able to see sample work.

They also need to be able to show off their own ideas and thoughts. Limited board space limits student understanding, and a document camera would solve this problem entirely. Students would be able to easily display their problems and ideas, as well as be able to easily see the notes and demonstration of the instructor. A document camera would raise my students' class experience to a new level of learning, a level they (as all students) deserve.
