Sparking Interest with Rick Riordan

My Students

Imagine being able to connect to history by reading modern literature, and enjoying it along the way! It has always been my goal as a teacher to instill a love and appreciation of literature in my students, while also developing the reading and writing skills they need to be successful.

My students are sixth graders at a public school.

They are the "new kids in town," fresh from elementary school and still wide-eyed and awed about being in middle school with the big kids. Some come to us with a strong background in reading and writing, while others have a long ways to go before meeting the standards required of them. Our sixth grade follows a very special curriculum that connects topics throughout all the subjects. They begin learning world history in 6th grade, and they do so by not only getting the facts in social studies, but by connecting literature from Language Arts as well!

My Project

I would like a class set of 'The Red Pyramid,' by Rick Riordan to read with my students during the month of November, when they are studying Egypt in Social Studies. I have seen first hand the benefit of making these connections across the curriculum. Very often my students have been able to make deeper connections to the texts because they have learned the valuable background knowledge to understand, and they have been able to take what they read in Language Arts and apply it to their Social Studies work as well. Reading 'The Red Pyramid' will encourage them to use their higher order thinking skills to make connections and apply prior knowledge and make inferences.

Too often, children are not engaged in what they are reading, or simply claim they find it boring.

Thankfully the reading world now has Rick Riordan, whose stories merging ancient times with modern day captivate students, and they learn something along the way! I hope that by reading the novel, my students will not only become better readers, but they will develop an appreciation of reading as well, and see that learning can be fun and interesting.
