My Students

It's not enough to read and learn about historical events. Students need to know that the world we live in is ever changing - and they need to be aware of what is going on in the world around them.

My 3rd grade class is located in a charter school in urban Michigan.

My students have been growing up in an environment where education is not a priority. Some of the parents at our school are illiterate themselves or lack a quality education, and therefore, do not support our efforts at school. I have made it my priority to bring the parents into our classroom with interesting activities and challenges.

My Project

Most families do not receive a daily newspaper anymore - and the TV is usually plugged into anything but educational programming or the nightly news. I encourage and reward my students to watch PBS shows such as "NOVA." The wonderful thing about it is that the students are engaging their parents in the educational programming as well! When current event subscriptions, such as "TIME for Kids" and "Weekly Reader" come home in their backpacks, the students also share them with their parents. We are a learning community and I can feel the excitement!

Due to the extreme budget cuts in Education, it is even more imperative that my students receive donations from our community that support their education.

Basic educational needs, such as reading and math, are met - but it always seems as though social studies is left behind for the younger grades since it is not a priority on state tests. I believe that science and social studies interest begins at the young grades - and needs to be implemented NOW.
