Reading Unplugged: Using ipods to Encourage Reading

My Students

My students are teenagers and they are readers! Through providing my students with choice in what they will read, the vast majority of them have reawakened the reader within them that they lost as they became older. For some, however, thick novels with tiny print are still intimidating.

I teach in a high poverty school in TN.

My juniors and seniors have many obstacles standing between them and success in school: working to support their families, not having enough to eat, a lack of resources and materials, learning disabilities and missed information from years past. Despite the problems they face, and despite their general teenage excuses, they are truly eager to learn, and I am eager to find ways to tap into that desire and help them become life-long learners.

My Project

Last year I initiated a choice reading program in my classroom that was so successful I often shed tears at the amount of reading my students were doing. They read, talked about their reading, searched for their next book. It was magical. Some students asked to read on their iPod touches, downloading books from iTunes and reading in class. This technology, they, said, made it seem that they were reading faster, allowed them to adjust text size and gave them resources like dictionaries at their fingertips. But only a handful of my students owned this technology. By having an iPod Touch in my classroom, I will be able to offer this option to all of my students. Not only can they enjoy the convenience of reading digitally, but, more importantly, I can provide the option of listening to audio books. For my students with learning disabilities, this is extremely important, but all of my students can benefit from this by improving their listening skills.

When children read, a whole world opens up to them.

Multiple studies have found that the amount of reading a student does directly correlates to their standardized test scores. The more students read, the better writers they become. Teenage readers who become adult readers pass that love onto their own children. How wonderful that we have technology available that can help this process begin! I know that reading is key to my students' future success, and I thank you for investing in them.
