My students need 24 children's books on basic economic principals to better understand how our economy works and to better prepare them for budgeting, saving and investing.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Dig deeper! Many of my students don't like economics or reading. With the use of children's books, these students can dig deeper into economic topics with simpler text and a greater understanding! These books introduce economic topics and allow the students to take control and make discoveries.
My students live in South Carolina and attend a rural, Title one, public school, where budget cuts happen all the time.
These young men and women are eager to learn and want more from education. They like being challenged and want to be a part of their education! These students are seniors in high school and want to be prepared for the world outside of our school. My students are hardworking and inquisitive. They like to explore topics and truly love learning something new. On the first day of school, as we talked about what they expected from this economics class, one student said "Just make it fun." The other students agreed, and I knew immediately that they did not want to listen to me lecture for an entire semester. These students learn from hands-on experiences and genuine learning experiences.
My Project
The children's books that I am requesting are not for young students, they are for seniors in high school. Economics can be a tough subject, especially for students who have limited experience with budgeting, investing, and saving. The children's books are a wonderful way for these students to explore the economic issues and subjects and dig deeper in a specific notion. In class, the students will use the books to preview economic material. I will also use some of the books for read alouds and journal writing. Even high school students like read alouds. The books detailing stocks and bonds will aid the students' research as we play the South Carolina Stock Market Game. The children's books will help my students understand economics in an entirely new light, one they understand! These books are great resources to prompt group discussion, journal writing, to discuss larger themes within economics, and to encourage them to write children's books for others.
I am currently enrolled in a language and literacy master's program.
I have come to value reading and writing as lifelong activities. I know that I can instill a love of reading and writing in my students, as well as an understanding of economics that will continue to benefit them after graduation and throughout their lives. This project will help lead these students to make positive economic decisions and pass on their love of reading and writing to others.
