No One Ever Said Growing Up Would Be Easy...

My students need 6 copies of 5 different texts that revolve around the theme, "Growing Up."

My Students

...but it could be a lot easier if students had access to relatable characters. Think back to your 6th grade year. What feeling do you most recall? If you ask most people to reflect this time, they remember low self-esteem, peer pressure, and an overwhelming sense of just not fitting in.

I am a sixth-grade teacher in a low-income neighborhood of New York City.

From the outset, my students often find themselves struggling to succeed. Students often bring with them the pressures of poverty, broken homes, split families, street violence….and on top of that? They’re emerging teenagers! All students want to succeed and want to enjoy reading – but it’s precisely at this point in their educational careers that so many students start to slip.

My Project

In order to aid my students in developing their self-esteem and promoting reading growth and enjoyment in my classroom, I’d like to be able to introduce them to what I call “sturdy” texts. These are pieces of literature with a strong core theme, growing up in this case, that promote reflection, self-awareness, and inspiration to struggling students. These books, many of them Newberry Award Winners, will be used in guided reading groups and in literature circles. With my guidance, students will do more than just read these great books – they will learn to explore them, analyze them, and take lessons to heart from them. Books, such as “Every Soul a Star” and “The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate” will surely help me do this.

If my students are going to grow as readers and scholars through this challenging part of their lives, they need to become invested in reading and themselves.

With your donation, you will make it possible for these sixth grade students to find stories that they can relate to and that will inspire them. And maybe, just maybe, growing up will be just a little easier. Thank you!
