Document Camera

My students need one ELMO document camera.

My Students

Imagine that you are sitting in front of a class of 20 squirmy, active second graders trying to read them a book with tiny pictures or trying to show them a piece of their own work. Now imagine that combined with cries of "I can't see" or "so and so is in my way."

I teach second grade in an inner-city school in Washington, DC.

My students are bright, energetic, and generally excited about learning. Many come from homes where their work is not celebrated and where books are not available. This is unfortunate because my students learn by example, they use books as mentor texts for reading and writing, and they use their own work and the work of their classmates, as guides for what to do next. That is why I am asking for your help.

My Project

I would like to purchase an ELMO document camera for my classroom. A document camera will make the viewing of books, student work, and other hard to see items so much easier. Just one example of how I can use this camera in my class has to do with using books as a mentor text for student writing. A mentor text is just as it sounds, a book that students use as a role model for their own writing. In the past showing students a particular sentence or paragraph from a book meant copying it onto a piece of chart paper (which takes away from some of its authenticity) or scanning the page in at home and printing off an enlarged copy (which takes away from spontaneity and teaching in the moment). With a document camera I can show a particular piece of writing just by placing the book under the camera. Then as we continue to talk about that particular text feature, or as students find examples of it in their own reading or writing, those examples can be placed under the camera as well.

I have a wonderful group of second graders who don't have access to books or their own work at home, so I do my very best to make sure they are exposed to them at home.

This is often difficult when 20 kids are trying to see the same tiny thing. A document camera will give me the power to make all of these items accessible to my students. It will also allow for more flexibility in my teaching since I will be able to pull examples in the moment rather than waiting. Thank you for your help.
