My Students

Students want to salute our soldiers through community service! My students are planning a Service-Learning project that stems from a Social Studies unit on the American Revolution and the lives of our military.

My students are a very fun-loving group who care about others.

Our small, rural school, located in Northwest GA is a place that is filled with love and support from parents, teachers, and the surrounding community. Families and educators here have the desire to cultivate students who not only excel academically, but also who are well-rounded and want to give back to others. With many of my students having immediate family members in the military, they selflessly voted to take on a project that would benefit soldiers who have been deported overseas. They wish to send them letters and care packages monthly through the Adopt-A-Troop organization. They also want to interview commanding officers and better understand what all the soldiers are sacrificing when choosing to leave their families to fight for our freedoms. These kids amaze me every day because they have such compassion and empathy for those who are in need.

My Project

One of the performance standards for 4th grade in the state of Georgia is to "explain the causes, events, and results of the American Revolution." Using the informational books requested for this project, students will look closely at the battles, historical leaders, and major causes of the War for Independence. I have also requested books about the U.S. military. Students will compare and contrast the life of a soldier living during the 1700s with the soldier fighting in battle today. After learning and being exposed to the curriculum, students will build on their knowledge by participating in the Adopt-A-Troop program. They will write letters and create care packages to send to a troop overseas. I have requested mailing envelopes and patriotic copy paper for students to use for composing their letters. Students also would like to communicate with their troop via webcams. This would enable students to interview military officers online and better understand the life of a soldier.

Service-Learning is a way for students to apply what they are learning in the classroom to real life situations and events.

By relating the curriculum to issues in their own lives (in this case family members who are in the military) my students are more apt to take a stand and invest themselves in something they believe to be of great importance. This project takes an event in history and makes it real and applicable to students' lives today.
