Can You Really Read Aloud To Fourth Graders?

My students need 15 award-winning books from which we can read aloud.

My Students

Do you remember being read to as a child? This is such an important event in a child's life, not to mention his or her education, and that need remains throughout childhood. My students need to hear fun stories, interesting articles and fascinating novels.

My students all live in a rural area of North Carolina and they come from a variety of different backgrounds.

Some have been read aloud to since an early age, and others, for a wide variety of reasons, have not. By hearing a wonderful book read aloud, my students will enjoy reading more, develop a better sense of the English language (several of them are first-generation Americans) and get hooked on the worlds that exist only through out imaginations.

My Project

I have requested a single copy of a variety of books based upon research-based lists, award-winning authors and those books I loved as a child or have watched former students (especially reluctant readers) fall in love with over the years. I want to read these books out loud to my students so that they can enjoy reading even more, see my enthusiasm for these fascinating stories and hear language that is written well.

Countless researchers have published articles heralding "read-alouds" throughout school.

In the early years, this is easy, but as students age, we teachers sometimes forget how important (not to mention enjoyable) this act is. Please help me stock my classroom with books my students will love to hear and experience. Please help us remember how to enjoy literature and enjoy the all the benefits that come from reading a truly great book!
