Seeing and Hearing how Atoms Bond

My students need molecular model kits so that they can better visualize atoms and the Echo smartpen to help have access to learning at any time.

My Students

(To the tune of "THE ADAM's FAMILY") "They are so small. They make up the air. Can see them at ALL. They're tiny and they're teeny, Much smaller than a beany, They never can be seeny... The ATOMS Family!" To visualize and understand the concept of bonding w/o ever seeing an atom?? Please help!

Our school is a comprehensive high school that caters to college bound students as well as tech and vocational schools.

My students are both your future doctors and car mechanics. They are typical students with problems and dreams alike. Each one is unique with a desire to learn and grow. I have high expectations of my students, but they know I have high expectations of myself as well. Because of this, they work hard and enjoy coming to a class where they are respected, believed in and challenged. At the end of the school year, one of my favorite moments is not in my classroom at all. My students go to the local elementary schools where they perform demonstration. To see how much my high school students have learned throughout the year as they teach to the delighted faces of younger learners (my future students) who admire the high school students, is such a reward for me. Sometime they are teaching in the very classrooms where they were once the students. They can be proud.

My Project

Model sets help students see AND feel what they can't see! Students are able to construct molecules and then predict their properties based on their molecular shape, bond length and bond order. While model sets are an old trick of the trade...one of the newest "cheap" technologies is a Echo™ smartpen that can record a conversion while students (or the teacher) write down notes or comments. I teach Chemistry- for many students this is a subject that they really have to pay attention to fully understand the topics or concepts. Sometimes students need to hear an explanation more than once. With the smartpen's ability to record a conversation, lecture or test (sometimes need as part of an IEP) students will be able to extent the teacher time without the teacher. Since I don't have one yet, I think the best testament is from teachers who do...I highly recommend you check our the website with examples of how the pen might be used: http://www.livescribe.com/en-us/education/learning.html

The Echo™ smartpen records everything you hear, write and draw.

Later, simply tap on your notes to replay the recording so you can find what you need, instantly. THIS IS AMAZING. One of the most difficult parts of teaching for me is the time to give each student the feedback that they need. The Echo would allow me the ability to record value feedback to my students that I would not be able to give if I had to hand write it on each paper. I have more ideas than this will allow me to write!
