Picture Perfect Behavior !

My students need 6 digital cameras to add photographs of their projects and their activities to their school work portfolios.

My Students

"Can I hold your camera, Ms. C?" That is what I hear from students whenever I am out and about in the halls and classrooms of the school taking photos of the various projects, classwork, and activities that are always taking place. What a joy it will be to be able to put the cameras in their hands.

We serve students who have been determined to be autistic or to have severe emotional and behavioral disorders.

We have about 200 students-we serve all grades K - 12, and ages 3- 22. The students who come to our school have been referred by their home schools as needing extra support in order to have a successful school day. Teaching appropriate behavior and social skills is at the heart of our program, while at the same time ensuring that the students get full access to the academic curriculum. For the majority of the students we serve the goal is to have them return to their home schools and use the skills and strategies that they have learned with us, have a successful school experience. Our students are not all that different from the students at the regular schools in that they are very motivated by the use of technology to help them learn and in that they really want to learn. The majority of our students have learning deficits and function below their actual grade level.

My Project

The first thing that the students will learn with these cameras is how to use them. They will be instructed in the proper care so that many future students will be able to benefit from this valuable equipment. They will learn how to download the media to the computer and they will learn to use photo editing software to enhance the images. They will learn the basics of framing a good shot within the viewfinder and what makes a good photo. The academic uses for cameras is endless. They will take photos of their activities, science experiments, projects, plays, and more. They will create a photo journal of their year-choosing the best representative photos from their photo collection. They will take them on field trips and then put together a show with captions to show what they learned on the trip. In our own backyard they can take photos of how math expresses itself in nature and then put it together in a book that they create. They will be motivated to design their own lessons to learn!

Being able to receive these cameras will make a huge impact on the students who use them.

I have seen how students are just drawn to cameras-they really are-when I walk around with my camera students start walking toward me like I am a magnet of some kind. Cameras can make sad and even angry children smile. They are a wonderful teaching and learning tool that can be used across grades and curriculum. Our students would be delighted and grateful to have such a wonderful opportunity. Thank you!
