Teaching Tolerance to 5th Graders with Maniac Magee

My students need 33 individual copies of the book Maniac Magee by Jerry Spinelli.

My Students

Do you remember the first time you read a book that had a big impact on you as a person? "Maniac Magee" (a Newbery Medal winner) is one of those books. My students need individual copies so that they can read along with me and act out the dialogue.

While my 5th grade students come from a myriad of ethnic and economic backgrounds, the majority of them are English Learners.

Many of them also come from poor households. While our school has a well stocked library, it does not have class sets of books. This makes it difficult to do a class read aloud, with a book in each student's hands.

My Project

I love to read the story "Maniac Magee" with my students shortly after the start of the school year. I have found that it not only engages all students, it creates a lot of discussion about friendships, racism, compassion, and life in general. These discussions help us create a classroom that is safe and tolerant.

By having individual copies of the book, my students will be more engaged and excited when they can read along and act out the dialogue.

Students will learn about tolerance, acceptance, and compassion which will then lead to a more cohesive classroom community. This book will be one of many that we will read this year that addresses our classroom theme of "Doing the Right Thing."
