A Picture (or Video) is Worth 1000 Words!

My students need a digital camera to see themselves through the "eyes of others".

My Students

"A good snapshot stops a moment from running away." This Eudora Welty quote sums up my belief that using photos/video to show my theater students how they look on stage will enhance my efforts to help them succeed in their art. Seeing the "stage pictures" they create will reinforce my "1000 words".

My theater students all seem to have the desire to become the best actors/technicians they can be.

Being at a small school (300 students), they don't have some of the advantages of the larger schools - advanced lighting and sound systems, etc... - but they do have the same passion for their art. The yearly budget I'm given for these students is to be used for all theater-related needs that I may have (including costumes, props, scripts, production rights, etc...). The problem is the budget (not enough to even purchase this camera) usually is completely spent on necessities before the year ends, thus leaving nothing for other items that would enhance learning.

My Project

By having this camera available for daily use, I would be able to provide my students with the opportunity to see their performances from the audiences' point of view. While on stage, most beginning actors don't always realize how what they are doing on stage translates to the viewers. They see their actions from their point of view, but can't visualize the "big picture". I can tell them over and over that they need to be aware of spacing, posture, angles, etc.. but, for some, the concept doesn't register until they can see what I'm seeing. I think that by having a camera that will take still pictures and videos, I can show them "snapshots" of their "stage pictures" as well as videos of their scenes. I hope that this combination of visuals will reinforce the concepts I'm teaching them - concepts that will make them more aware on stage, but also hopefully more aware of the world around them when not in the theater - thus making them better people, as well as students.

I strive to make every effort to do all I can to provide my students with the best opportunity to become the actors (and people) they wish to be.

I think that showing them pictures and video of their "stage presence" will help me achieve this goal because - "A good snapshot stops a moment from running away." It is my goal to create students who take time to look at each "moment" on stage and, as a result, become individuals who value each "moment" in life.
