Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Imagine preparing for a literature exam without access to enough literature? This is the challenge my AP English Literature students face.
My students have all survived 12 years of an urban education.
While they often feel social pressure to underachieve in school, these students all dream of being successful college students, which is how they have ended up in my literature course.
Most of my students do well in school already, but many times, they do feel under-challenged. Often they have made it 12th grade without really having to dig deep or to really study. If I had a $1 for every time a student said, "But, Miss, this is the first book I've read in high school!" I'd have enough money to buy the books we'd need.
My Project
Each year, I try to find literature that is moving and interesting, but will also demand that they delve into something with depth and complexity. In class, we read Shakespeare, Capote, Atwood, and Chaucer. What is lacking from our curriculum is access to non-white voices.
I hope this year that we will also be able to read Gabriel Garcia-Marquez because his use of language and his ability to create narratives with intricate plots are as inspirational as they are entertaining. Moreover, it will help expand my students' understandings of what constitutes literature and who is part of the Western Canon.
It is critical that we have access to texts that will allow students to discuss larger topics of literature.
We also must learn how to grapple with difficult work in an attempt to challenge our own abilities. Finally, it is critical that we have texts that represent different cultures. This text will help prepare students not only for the AP exam, but also for college-level work.
