Making Family Connections With Home Visits

My students need age appropriate school supplies including stickers, markers, scissors, paper, journals, and more so they can practice skills taught in the classroom at home as well.

My Students

Every good teacher understands the importance of making connections with the families of their students. A strong home-school connection is vital to a young child's education. To make this connection right away, I plan to visit the homes of my students prior to the first day of school.

I work in a preschool classroom for children with autism spectrum disorders.

My classroom is located on an isolated site with 5 classes that only serve children with special needs. Because we are a preschool site, we do not receive Title I or ADA funding because those programs do not assist preschools. However, because we are a special education site, we do not receive the funding that other preschool programs receive such as HeadStart. This means that any "extras" we need in the classroom are not likely to be purchased by the school district, and in the end the teachers donate their own money to purchase these materials. In addition to the budget crisis at school, many of my students do not have the necessary supplies to practice their skills learned in the classroom with their families at home. When I visit their homes, I want to bring each child a tote bag filled with school supplies to be used at home to reinforce their skills.

My Project

In order to bring each child age appropriate school supplies, I am requesting items such as glue, scissors, crayons, stickers, and paper as well as a tote bag to store everything. I will decorate the tote bags prior to my visit with the child's name so they know when I walk through the door that the bag is for them. I will also use the card stock and magnetic adhesive to make "business card" refrigerator magnets with our school contact information so that parents can have a quick and easy way to reference my phone number and email address should they wish to contact me. These tote bags will not only be an ice breaker to the initial awkwardness of meeting for the first time, but will also allow my students to practice the skills taught in class at home with their families throughout the school year.

When I visit their homes for the first time, I want the families of my students to know that I care about their child.

It is my hope that these tote bags filled with age-appropriate school supplies will be a welcome gift for my students and provide them with hours of fun practicing skills taught in the classroom.
