My Students

Help my students take ownership of their writing. Give them personal journals to write in and keep all year long that will also show mom and dad how far they have come!

I teach kindergarten in a Title I elementary school in NC.

We have a large Hispanic population, and the majority of our students are from low-income families. Most have come into kindergarten not knowing their letters, let alone how to write or even hold a pencil correctly. Some have never used a pencil before. They are eager to learn and love to be able to call notebooks their own.

My Project

With the "Word Journals" my students will be able to write our sight words as we learn them in their notebook which they will keep and use throughout the year. My students will use the "Draw and Write Journal" to write sentences about books, things we have learned, or anything else that inspires them. Then they will be able to illustrate their writing with their very own picture! The spacers will help guide them and remind them to space their words to make it easier for them and others to read. The good thing about these spacers is they are made of wood and will not bend and break like others I have had to discard in the past.

My students will love to have their own journals with all their work inside to show off their accomplishments!

Last year I made my own journals with construction paper and staples but the staples began pricking fingers or falling out after just a couple uses. Pages would fall out randomly as well. I would like journals sturdy enough that my kindergarteners cannot accidentally tear them apart, journals they would take pride in owning!
