Reading Refuge

My students need a carpet and pillows for a inviting area of the room where reading can be a relaxing and enjoyable space.

My Students

"I have always imagined that Paradise will be a kind of library."-Jorge Luis Borges Picture it: You've had a long day and all you want to do is come home escape into your favorite book. You pull it out. You are ready to relax and find a little peace on your HARD, COLD, Linoleum floor?!

My students are from a high poverty area in southeast Virginia.

More than 75% of our students are on free and reduced lunch. Many of my students live in high crime areas and often school is the safest and most stable place they have. They often come to school lacking the early literacy experiences needed to be successful in kindergarten. I always have an amazing bunch of students who are eager to please and learn. I hope you will help me foster their success by funding this project.

My Project

I need your help to give my students an inviting area for independent reading time. Through a lot of thrift store shopping and generous donations I have a ton of age appropriate and exciting books for my students to enjoy, but I lack the furniture for them to relax and enjoy reading. Going to the classroom library center is not very exciting when you have to sit and read on the cold hard floor. The rug and furniture requested in this project will help make the classroom library a desired place to visit and stay. Reading is essential to academic success. My goal is to start my students down a path that encourages a love of reading. I want this for their academic success, but I also want this for their emotional well being. Because many of my students do come from unstable environments, they often have a lot of unresolved emotions and limited ways of dealing with those emotions. My hope is to show students that reading is not only fun, but it can also be a safe escape.

Having a space that makes reading inviting will peak student interest in reading.

Developing an early love of reading is essential for academic success. But I hope this project also leads my students to discover that reading can be a safe harbor too. "To acquire the habit of reading is to construct for yourself a refuge from almost all the miseries of life." ~W. Somerset Maugha
