My Students

Young children need hands on experiences to develop academic skills. Using varied art activities to develop literacy skills, catches their attention and imagination. Supplies are often not available in my student's home making their use at school even more important.

My students come from hard working families that have not had opportunities to provide their children with exposure to the visual arts.

Through our Forever Alphabet Book, I can show students examples of great works of art while they create their own masterpieces in a given medium. All of this while, enriching their literacy exposure and early reading skills. Each art project focuses on a particular letter and it's corresponding sound. The children write the word captions on their page and we collect the pages to make an alphabet book. The children review letters and sounds with great enthusiasm as they thumb through their books. At the end of the year, the book makes a cherished gift to share with their family.

My Project

My students will use the various art supplies to create a page for each letter of the alphabet. Each lesson begins with a visual presentation of various artist's work in the medium that we will be using. Student's discuss what they see, how the art makes them feel and how to use the materials. Time is spent in planning our work. Some examples include collage A - torn red/green/yellow pictures from magazines to cover an apple shape; quilt design Q - geometric shapes cut and glued to make a quilt; watercolor E - water color egg; scratch art U - scratch art work cut the shape of an umbrella and stamped with fingerprint raindrops; color mixing M - marble painting/color mixing cut like a lowercase m.

Through this project students are exposed to visual arts while learning early literacy skills.

Associating beginning sounds with a letter is one of the beginning steps to creating a successful reader. With busy school schedules, students may not get many chances to incorporate art study and practice into their school day. This year long project is an opportunity for them to do both.
