My Students

Many students enter first grade excited and ready to learn. When faced with reading challenges however, some students no longer feel excited and begin to withdraw. Through the use of books told through song, students have fun with reading and no longer feel afraid!

I teach a wonderful group of students in Eastern Alabama.

Some students have not had positive experiences with books or don't have home libraries. Children learn to read while practicing in non threatening environment. I plan to use my project to show students that reading can be done in a fun way! Due to the current economical climate, my classroom will not receive any funds. This project will combine my students' love of music with well known stories. This way students will practice reading while having fun!

My Project

Through the use of these materials, my students will begin to practice reading with the help of music and books. This allows students to feel more comfortable taking risks and increasing reading rate, fluency and is just plain fun! Many of these stories will be incorporated into the music center so that students interact while practicing reading skills!

Children are naturally drawn to music.

Using stories that highlight and reinforce rhymes, chants and well known songs helps broaden students reading skills. Music is a wonderful way to reach struggling readers! Being a part of this project ensures reading and music will be a part of my students lives beyond first grade.
