Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

When you are faced with a question, where do you look for an answer? Most likely it's the Internet. Students in the 21st century classroom sleep and breathe technology. They are digital learners, and their challenge is classrooms don't meet their needs.

My students live and attend public school in an urban city in New Jersey.

99% of my students come from economically disadvantaged families. Just about every student receives free or reduced lunch. Their is no technology at their houses for them to meet their learning styles. The only chance they get to use technology is when they are in school, and recently the district just removed all the computers from the classroom and have not replaced them. My students love when I bring my personal laptop in for them to use, but that is only once in a while. When they do get to use it, their faces light up with joy and they are eager to explore and learn.

My Project

I have requested an HP netbook (mini laptop). Since my students live in the 21st century technology is all around them, except for school. With this netbook we plan on creating math videocasts. These are short instructional videos on how to solve math problems. Using the netbook we will use screen casting software, cameras, and microphones to create the videocasts. After we edit and finalize the videos we will post them to iTunes U. Other students in our school, our district, and anyone who has access to iTunes will be able to view the videocasts we create. I know when a student is able to create a video explaining how to solve a problem, that student fully understands the math skill. For these math videocasts, we will add voice overs, music and sound effects, titles and transitions. With this netbook, students will want to come to class, want to learn the math skill, and want to create videocasts to show off their mathematical understanding.

Donations to this project will give my students a chance to use technology with their education.

I have a strong computer background (telecommunications degree), I've been to countless workshops on technology in education. The problem lays in the classroom where there is no computers. My students would be grateful if you could please donate to this project.
